Over time these studs can get cross-threaded, or snap, leaving you unable to use your engine. If your carb is not mounted securely, or if the seal between your carb and engine is not air tight, this could affect the running of your engine as it will let too much air into the fuel mixture and might allow damaging particles to enter the fuel system leading to expensive repairs.
